Consultation

MESA Counseling provides consultation to support the ongoing development and goal achievement of people who do not need psychotherapy. People in this category may be making significant life decisions or facing difficult life transitions related to career or family milestones.

Consultation is a service of evaluating, offering you advice, and recommending solutions. This is different from coaching, which supports you in carefully thinking things through for effective planning and implementation. A consultant brings experience, expertise, and specific training to the table to provide information and evaluation and suggest solutions and strategies.

Consultation, unlike coaching and psychotherapy, is not an ongoing service. It typically involves an interview or interviews to gather relevant information and then time for the consultant to compile the information, make an assessment, and develop recommendations. Then the results of the assessment are delivered verbally, in writing, or both.

This may occur in a one-hour format for a focused situation, but consultation on more involved situations will require more time. Each consultation project has unique components so the scope and duration are decided by you and the consultant together.

Combined Services

Often a consultation will include recommendations that can be achieved through a coaching engagement. This is especially relevant when the consultation leads to a development plan for you. You are not obligated to enter into a coaching agreement when coaching is recommended, and you are always free to choose whatever coach you prefer if you choose to be coached.

Clinical Consultation

A clinical consultation can be helpful when you are trying to sort out how to manage your role in a relationship with someone who appears to have a mental health challenge. A clinical consultation can help you consider your options for relating to the person, discover ways to provide support, or identify resources you can connect with or offer to the other person. A clinical consultation cannot provide diagnosis of the third party, but it can help you get a clearer idea of how different mental health conditions are expressed and what that might mean for your situation.
